Imagine you are walking along the Esplanade at night ...

and you come across a playground with three carousels and a see saw. The Three carousels are arranged in a triangle and ave gears underneath that attach to a central post with images at its top. The Carousels have flames coming out of the very tops in the center. It is dark and still. The structures are 10 feet tall and have 16 foot circumferences. Each of the 4 seats that go around each of the circles of the Merry Go Rounds are ornately designed devils and angels, buddahs and rabbits and other icons. In the center there are huge panels with mirrors on them and visages of all the Gods you can think of.

You get on one of the "cars" and start pedaling, causing the Carousel to begin spinning. Your moion causes the middle pole to turn. It moves slowly at first, but once you've moved a few feet, suddenly a switch inside is activated by your motion and the entire thing lights up. Music begins playing. Arms and faces on the center structure begin to move from the mechanical motion of the Carousel. Yin Yangs spin, Vevers move up and down, crosses jerk back and forth. It's pretty dramatic.

Then you see buttons or handles inside the car you are pedalling and you hit one. If you're on an angel car you might hear snippets of the Hallelujahh Chorus coming from the center cone structure. Other buttons set off other angelic sound events. A friend jumps on a devil car and starts setting off the theme from the Exorcist or cackling demon screams. Eventually the other seats are full. People are pedalling together and the mechanicall structures are moving faster and faster. All the sound events are merging into one grand cacophony of voices and sounds that can be heard out on the playa.

Just like Religion,

the Carousel Numinous is an interactive experience that allows anyone to participate and take part in the circular motion of life and belief systems. The energy each person provides powers the dieties that inhabit the central structure. Just like religion, a mass of different sounds rise up and mix together, all worshipping the same essential core idea and it is that participation in the concept that gives religion its power. Riding these icons is a metaphor for participation in the Sacred in all of its forms. It is an exercise in riding the Numinous.
