There are three main parts to the pre-playa Carousel project.

1. Building the framework. This involves the designing, collecting materials and assembly of the Carousel structures. Right now we're thinking most fabrication will happen at Shane & Julia's house in San Rafael. Some work can take place at the Bird's Nest since we've scaled down the project. People who can't work at Shane's shop welding can help find and pick up supplies.

2. Creating the art for the panels, platforms and cars. Once these things are built, they'll become art pieces at the Bird's Nest

3. Electrical, fire and mechanical pre fabrication. These things will happen at both Shane's and the Birds Nest.

Man would it be nice to have a huge warehouse.

There are several challenges to the project.

  • Cost. We're trying to get a grant. If we don't get a grant, we'll know how much this is going to cost in a couple months. As Josh suggested, we'll have various plans, each with a different cost. The Events should bring in money.
  • It's been done, kind of. Our concept is different. In 2001 a group made the Spinning Anemone. Check out their structure and how they did it. Granted, ours is going to be a lot more extravagant, but we thought the fact that it's been done before might influence our ability to get a grant. the other one
  • Co-ordinating fabrication. We're going to have to build this thing in two locations so there will be shuttling pieces back and forth between SF and San Rafael.
  • Testing it. We'll need to find a place to put it together to test it. Since we're making 3 carousels, this will be easier to test now.
